Despite being Central America’s largest country, Nicaragua very much remains an up-and-coming travel destination. But once you discover Nicaragua’s natural wonders, friendly locals and colonial gems, it’s easy to understand why the country is on almost everyone’s bucket list for 2015. If you’re looking for a luxurious getaway, then you’re in luck—Nicaragua has a plethora of affordably scrumptious retreats to choose from.
Here are four that have my eye for an escape this year:
1. Yemaya Island Hideaway
It doesn’t get more luxurious than the Yemaya Island Hideaway and Spa. The retreat offers world-class cabinas, spectacular ocean views, an award-winning spa, and invigorating yoga classes just steps away from the Caribbean Sea. Yemaya Island Hideaway and Spa is located on Little Corn Island, a small tropical paradise just 90km off of the coast. Between the crystal-clear water and swaying palms, it won’t take long to see why Little Corn is also known as the “African goddess of the sea”. If you love staying active on vacations, there’s plenty to do here. In between the holistic cooking classes, the natural skin care workshops, the scuba diving and the horseback riding, you can stay as busy — or as still — as you please.
2. Mukul Luxury Resort and Spa
If you’re looking for true luxury, than Mukul Luxury Resort and Spa is the obvious choice. Mukul is Mayan for “secret”, and this hotel is truly one secluded gem on Nicaragua’s pristine Emerald Coast. The retreat is also Nicaragua’s first 5-star resort, changing the perceptions of the tourism industry in the country. Mukul was founded by businessman Carlos Pellas, whose family has long produced the renowned Flor de Cana rum. Staying true to its heritage, the resort menu features fine rum and complimentary tastings. In between meals, don’t miss the 18-hole golf course or nearby private cove.
3. Hotel Xaltera
No visit to Nicaragua is complete without a stop in Granada, one of Central America’s most charming colonial towns. Characterized by its colorful buildings, well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, and delightful location on the banks of Lake Nicaragua, be sure to budget at least a few days for the destination. For accommodation, Hotel Xaltera is a boutique hotel combining timeless colonial design with modern convenience. The quaint balconies, fully equipped kitchens, volcano views and affordable prices are what truly set it above the rest. If you’re interested in an extended getaway, the hotel even offers reasonable monthly rentals!
4. Hotel El Convento
Located in central Leon, what makes Hotel El Convento truly unique is its situation in a former 17th-century convent. While not as luxurious as some of the other hotels on the list, the sculptured garden, antique-lined hallways and historic artwork make this a one-of-a-kind stay. After all, it’s not everyday you can say you slept in a convent dating back to 1639! While you’re there, don’t miss the popular on-site restaurant featuring international cuisine.
Nicaragua may not be known for it’s luxurious retreats, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a glam girl’s getaway in this Central American gem! Pick your favorite or stay at them all to fully experience the vast beauty of the country!
Have you stayed at any of these retreats in Nicaragua? Which one sounds like your favorite?

Luxury and affordability and South America – I love this for a future trip!
It’s GRANADA.
Grenada is an island.
You know how that auto-correct is sometimes 🙂 Thanks Kelvin!
