Vanilla Adventures: A Passport for Your Palette

One of the best parts of traveling is getting to try all the different foods! Fresh pasta in Italy, mochi in South Korea, ceviche in Peru. Travel goes hand in hand with a variety of different flavors. When you arrive home from your trip to different parts of the world, you are going to remember all of the delicious tastes that you discovered along your way. You are going to have to recreate some of those flavors at home.

If there’s one thing that being stuck at home can do, it can cause cravings. Are you feeling the absence of fresh, international flavors? Me too. My palette probably needs as much adventure as my passport. Nothing compares to sitting in a foreign land with a drink in one hand. So I decided to try and remedy the wanderlust with a little bit of this vanilla syrup.

Adventure Awaits

I went with vanilla because it’s a pretty versatile flavor. Vanilla is usually grown in warm climates, but its influence is found all over the world. Pastries, creams, lattes, liquors – I even found a seafood recipe that can use it. What can’t be made with vanilla?

I figured one bottle can be used all day—from coffee to cocktails. When looking for flavors, it’s also important to pick syrups that are made without artificial stuff (it completely ruins the taste). I picked this bottle from Monin because there are no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or sweeteners. Bring on the pure vanilla!

Early Morning with Earl Grey

To start my sojourn, I took a trip up to Nova Scotia and tried making an imitation Lawrencetown Fog. After several botched attempts at steaming and frothing milk (barista might not be my destiny), I gave up on the dream of a perfect foam heart. Instead, I whisked the syrup with a little regular milk, then used it to cool off the hot tea. The vanilla is fresh and smooth so it’s definitely a great choice for brightening Earl Grey’s earthy flavor. It’s a straight-up hug in a mug!

Where To Next?

While sipping my super fancy tea, I did a little research on what else I can make with my new syrup. The thing has some serious variety! Here are a few recipes I’ve found so far:

  • Vanilla Cappuccino – Kind of like the Lawrencetown Fog, just mix your favorite milk with the syrup and add in espresso for a little jaunt to Italy
  • Madagascar Lemon Drop – When I think summer, I think lemons. Head over to Madagascar with this fresh, sweet cocktail recipe
  • Pineapple Basil Lemonade – Go to your own private tropical island with this drink. The pineapple makes it summery while the basil provides a cool aftertaste
  • Sugar Plum Cocktail – Plums can be found all over China, America, and Europe. Make this sweet drink and take a mental vacation pretty much anywhere in the world. I, for one, will be imagining I’m at China’s Summer Palace
  • Tropical Green Apple Sour – This drink is a vacation and childhood in a glass!
  • Holiday Spiced Rumtini – Americans celebrate the holidays, but the Brits go on holiday.  With Christmas-y spices, this drink is a real holiday in every sense
  • Vanilla Whipped Cream – Feeling French and fancy but craving something sweet? Try this on top of your favorite drink.
  • I even found a Roasted Lobster recipe. If it’s good enough for the New York Times, I’ll definitely give it a try.

Landing in Mexico

Since I spent the morning traveling (via flavor) to Canada, I decided to go further south to Guadalajara for cocktail hour. Okay, it wasn’t exactly five o’clock yet, but every hour is cocktail hour when I’m craving an excursion.

That brings us to the Cinnamon Churro Cookie Cocktail. I love churros, but am not down for hours of piping and frying the dough. This recipe was an excellent way to polish off the day and satisfy a sweet tooth. If I can’t get on a plane, I can be content traveling the globe through flavor.
