Accessible traveling can be difficult, but not impossible, for those traveling in wheelchairs. Some cities are more accessible than others, and some, (I’m looking at you, NYC), have a reputation for being downright inaccessible.

This article features some of the most accessible places to travel in 2020. Even though they are very different from one another, they all meet the following criteria:

  •  Most of the tourist attraction sites are accessible by wheelchair.
  • They are appropriate for people of all age groups, solo travelers, and families.
  •  They have both public and private transportation.

Chicago, Illinois

This city, popularly known as the ‘Windy City,’ is one of the most attractive cities in the United States. It is along Lake Michigan, and there are plenty of water-related activities. The town has beautiful waterfront beaches and interesting cuisine. It is one of the most accessible cities in the country, and you can visit most of the attractions in a wheelchair.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the second biggest city in Spain. It is ranked as one of Europe’s most accessible cities. There are plenty of attractions for wheelchair users, including the La Sagrada Familia church, accessible beaches, art and cultural museums, and shopping malls. The public transportation system is wheelchair-friendly, and there are lots of accessible taxis. It is one of the easiest cities to get around in 2020.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Being the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas, Nevada is a popular attraction for both solo travelers and families. Las Vegas has a wide variety of foods, activities, experiences, and performances to suit everyone’s needs

Cape Town, South Africa

This picturesque city is one of the most accessible places in the world. It has an extensive list of accessible things to do, and they include winery tours, museums, accessible beaches, public parks, and a 1300-acre botanical garden. If you plan on visiting Asia in a wheelchair, Singapore is your best option by far. It has wheelchair taxis, a modern metro system, and accessible buses. You can get around the city with no trouble. There are wheelchair accessible attractions, including the Flower Dome, national museums, Ferris Wheel, and accessible shopping centers.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Being one of the oldest United States cities, Philadelphia has a lot to offer. Its accessible attractions include the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and over ten amazing museums of history, art, and science.

Luxembourg City

Luxembourg City is beautiful, and it has a rich historical value. Its old charm and beautiful architecture are common attractions. With its accessible trams and buses, you can get around the city with ease. There are elevators along the hillside, making it great for wheelchair use.

Venice, Italy

Even with its pesky bridges, Venice is a great place to visit in a wheelchair.  The city will provide you with maps to show accessible routes in various neighborhoods. There are bridges with ramps that you can easily navigate. The roadways are canals, so there are no cars. Most of the water bus routes have space for at least one wheelchair user in every boat. Most museums and art galleries have discounted prices for wheelchair users and their caretakers.

Toronto, Canada

Toronto is one of the most accessible cities in Canada. It has plenty of tourist attractions for families. Some of the best places to visit are the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the CN Tower. If you have the time, consider catching up on a baseball game at the Rogers Center.

Berlin, Germany

Berlin has been one of the most accessible cities in Europe for many years. It is one of the largest cities, and it has lots of attractions. There are plenty of wheelchair-accessible places and activities. Some of the must-sees include the Topography of Terror Museum, and the East Side Gallery, which features the biggest sections of the Berlin Wall. The cuisine is amazing, and there are accessible buses and taxis.

Traveling in a wheelchair can be stressful and scary, especially when you don’t know what to expect. Fortunately, there are lots of accessible cities in 2020, and you can get to the most popular destinations without much hassle. Doing some research ahead of time could make all the difference.
