Travel Back in Time and Trace Your Ancestor’s Footsteps Across the Globe

0

Traveling is an amazing privilege and experience. But lately a new trend has emerged in the travel world: following your ancestry around the globe.

If this idea interests you but you are unsure how to go about it, read on to find out how you can travel back in time and follow your ancestors around the world.

Find Out Your History

The first step in this possibly life changing journey is quite an obvious one, and that’s to make sure that you know your family history so that you have a starting point for your newest travel adventure. One of the easiest ways to find out your family history lies with you; your surname (or last name for those of us in the US).

Surnames have an amazing way of transcending time and leading us on a journey through the past into who our great ancestors are. There are many ways that you can research your surname online, for example if you were to search for the Smith name origin, you would be able to discover where the surname is earliest found and therefore where you may have originated from.

Reach Out to Distant Relatives

Once you have found out where your ancestors may have originated from, the next step (which is not completely necessary), is to reach out to potential distant relatives that you have found on your search.

Often you will find that they live far away from you, and sometimes on the other side of the world. While this step can be intimidating and worrying, it has the potential to take you to places in the world that you have never been and find members of your own family that you had no idea existed. Through this journey you may not only find your distant family, but make amazing lifelong friends out of them also.

Visit Historical Sites Relevant to Your Family History

While every individual’s family history is completely unique to them, some people’s past may be more historically interesting than others. For example, you may find that a great relative fought in a historical and life-changing war, meaning that you can continue your ancestry adventure and expand it into visiting sites where your family may once have fought, lived or simply visited themselves.

Not only will this expand your life experiences, but it will also bring you much closer to a family that you never personally knew nor will get the chance to fully understand. When you are visiting historical sites around the world, it is important that you respect their rules and regulations, as you most likely will not be the only person who has a connection to the site through a loved one.

Going on an ancestral journey around the world will be one of the most exciting, nerve-wracking and spiritually awakening experiences that you can ever embark upon. So, what are you waiting for? Take a step into the past and discover things about yourself that you never knew while experiencing amazing and new cultures.
